About The Event
Gee’s Bend tells the story of post-Civil War Boykin, Alabama and the Pettway family. The
Pettways, in 1939, teach us how to survive civil unrest, poverty, bad weather and show gratitude
during rough times. Sheryl Ned leads the cast as Sadie. Her strong will to survive by quilt-
making is observed by the whole family: Nella, Sadie's older sister; Alice, Sadie's mother; Asia,
Sadie's daughter and Macon.
In addition to the performance, the audience will be able to see on display and in the show, quilts
from across Louisiana and the country, including Gee's Bend. Ms. Katheryn Batiste, is
Coordinator for Quilting Sisters and member of Quilter's Guild of Acadiene. The guild with
about 140 members gives quilts to police departments, veteran’s groups, hospice, hospitals and
others.
