About The Event
Like few other operas, Così fan tutte probes the depths of what it means to be human and live in relationship with others, and it displays a profound psychological understanding of human nature matched by few other works for the stage, operatic or other. It starts with a simple bet that puts love to the test with two young men, Ferrando (Chad Boudreaux, tenor) and Guglielmo (Casey Robichaux, baritone), bragging about the virtues of their fiancées, sisters Fiordiligi (Kristen Marchiafava, soprano) and Dorabella (Shelby Runyan, mezzo). With a name that practically screams “master manipulator,” the cynical Don Alfonso (Miguel Ochoa, bass-baritone) rouses two friends into making a backstabbing wage—testing that women’s faithfulness won’t withstand a day of the men’s absence. The suitors accept the bet not only to disguise themselves, but to also woo each other’s brides-to-be. As Don Alfonso financially persuades the beautiful maid Despina (Dawn Boudreaux, soprano), the outcome will either defend the virtue of the two sisters love, or expose that “all women deceive men.”
